Today I wanted to add a new Virtual Machine after the VMM 2008 R2 server was offline for 3 weeks. The first problem was, that we were not able to connect to the VMM 2008 R2 console on any remote machine. It was only possible on the VMM Server. The solution was to reinstall the VMM server.

After that there was no chance to add new VM or new P2V operation with the following error:

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact an agent on the %serverName%.
(Element not found (0x80070490))

Recommendation Action

Ensure that the agent is installed and running. Ensure the WS-Management service is installed and running, then restart the agent.

The Solution was

The solution is to remove the managed hosts from the VMM server and delete any residual certificate from the host on the VMM server, and then re-add the host.

Steps

  1. Remove the managed host from the VMM Server.
  2. Open on the managed Hyper-V Host the mmc console
  3. Add the certificate snap-in with computer account and local computer
  4. Delete the certificate with friendly name ‘SCVMM_CERTIFICATE_KEY_CONTAINER’ in the personal certificate folder.
  5. Re-Add the Hyper-V host in the VMM server.

These steps will recreate the certificates as needed. More information:
